Review: Carmen by Aja

Synopsis:

Some women fall in love. Carmen learned how to survive it.

She wanted the man with power, the life that came with him, the kind of love that looked like protection and felt like possession. And for a moment… she had it. But love doesn’t always choose you back.

Caught between the man she fought to keep and the one who reminds her of who she used to be, Carmen makes a choice that will cost her everything. Her heart. Her children. Herself.

The worst part is she knows she’s wrong… and does it anyway.
In the suspense-filled world of The Enigma Series characters, everyone has a past. These are their stories.

This is the last Enigma Origin Story and is best read after enjoying Smoke, Maestro & Slick.

My Review:

Carmen is one of the most powerful and emotionally layered books in Aja’s Enigma Origins series. While readers may have already formed opinions about Carmen through Smoke, Maestro, Slick, and The Enigma Series, this story finally gives her a voice of her own—and it changes everything. Through Carmen’s perspective, Aja peels back the layers of a woman shaped by a painful childhood, complicated love, survival instincts, and a lifetime of hard decisions. Carmen is far from a perfect character, but that’s exactly what makes her feel so real. She loved the only way she knew how, made choices that carried devastating consequences, and spent much of her life searching for validation, security, and a love she never truly believed she deserved.

What makes this book unforgettable is its emotional depth and honesty. Aja dives deep into Carmen’s psyche, exploring how her upbringing, relationship with Smoke, feelings of inadequacy beside Zora, and eventual involvement with Bear all contributed to her downfall. The story doesn’t excuse Carmen’s actions, including abandoning her children, but it does provide heartbreaking context that allows readers to finally understand her desperation and the impossible choices she believed she had to make to protect the people she loved. Even Smoke’s imperfections are examined in a way that adds complexity to their relationship and the tragedy surrounding it.

This book is raw, moving, thought-provoking, and incredibly difficult to put down. The epilogue alone adds another emotional layer, showing the lasting impact of Carmen’s choices on everyone connected to her. Whether readers walk away loving Carmen or not, they will almost certainly leave with a deeper understanding of her humanity. Aja has once again proven herself a master storyteller, delivering what many readers may consider her best work yet—an unforgettable character study wrapped in heartbreak, survival, loyalty, and love in all its flawed forms.
